Getting here from Atlanta

Directions to our cottage on Lake Burton, Clayton, GA, from Atlanta area . . .

1. Take I-85 North from Atlanta, to I-985 (Gainesville Connector). From our house, this is 29 mi.

2. Exit left onto I-985 North and continue past Gainesville, where the highway becomes US-23/GA-365 (continues as four-lane divided, but no longer limited access, after Gainesville). US-441 joins with it near Demorest. Stay left on US-23/US-441 North toward Clayton when GA-365 splits off to the right to Toccoa. Stay on US-441 North until the Tiger Conn. exit, south of Clayton. Landmark for this turn on the left is "Goats on the Roof," a store that has . . . goats on the roof, obviously. Mileage from the start of I-985, to the Tiger Conn., is about 74 mi.

3. Turn left (west) on the Tiger Connector. Continue straight, through the stop sign in downtown Tiger, and continue straight on Bridge Creek Road, until you reach Davis Gap Road. Mileage from Goats on the Roof to Davis Gap Road is 3.3 miles. Use your odometer; the turn is tricky to find.

4. Turn right (north) on Davis Gap Road, just before Liberty Baptist Church. Take Davis Gap until it intersects US-76, west of Clayton. Mileage on Davis Gap Road is 1 mi., with lots of up and then lots of down.

5. Turn left (west) on US-76, and continue to Charlie Mountain Road. Landmarks are Mark's Marine on the left, and Timpson Creek Gallery on the right, just before the turn onto Charlie Mtn. Rd. Mileage is 2.4 mi.

6. Turn left (south) on Charlie Mountain Road. Go about 500 ft, and take the first right, which is Timpson Cove Road. Landmark: sign for Anchorage Marina.

7. Go right on Timpson Cove Road, about a quarter mile. You will pass the entrance to Anchorage Marina (Anchor Lane), on the left. The next house after passing the entry to the marina is 308 Timpson Cove Road.

Total mileage from our house is about 108 miles. Half of it is interstate highway, and most of the rest is multi-lane divided highway. Only the last 7 miles includes 2-lane roads. Travel time is about 1 hour 45 minutes.

If you need to go through Clayton for shopping, skip the Tiger Conn. turn, and stay on 23/441 North into Clayton. Then take US-76 west from Clayton, to Charlie Mountain Road, and continue from step 6, above. It’s about 7 miles from Clayton to Charlie Mountain Road. If you get to the US-76 bridge over the lake, you’ve gone 2 miles past the turn.
