Trash and recycling

There is no public trash service in the Timpson Cove area, but there is a convenient self-service trash and recycle center nearby:

Household trash should be bagged for disposal. Recyclable items must be separated into: aluminum cans, steel cans and other scrap metals, glass (sorted green, clear, brown), plastic containers (#1 and #2 recycle codes), cardboard (boxes broken down), and other paper.

Guests should dispose of all household trash. If you have built up a substantial amount of recyclable materials, please sort and dispose of them also, at the recycle center.

Raven Rock, Chattooga River (Section 4)

Taylor and I hiked down to the Chattooga River at Raven Rock, about a mile downhill to the river. The hike is easy going down, more difficult coming back uphill. Location: 34.778, -83.321

Raven Chute, a class-IV rapid

Two hundred foot cliff, on the South Carolina side of the river.

Taylor takes a dip in the river.
Large specimen of cauliflower mushroom (sparassis crispa) along the trail. It is an edible mushroom,
often found at the base of conifers.
From US 441/23 around Lakemont, take Camp Creek Road (paved), heading east. At 1.5 miles, turn left (north) on Water Gauge Road, which becomes gravel shortly. After 2.6 miles on Water Gauge, turn left on Raven Rock Road, and follow it about 1 mile, to the trailhead at the end. From here, it is less than a mile on foot to the river. We did not need 4-wheel drive anywhere on this route, but it is slow going once you leave Camp Creek Rd.

New sundeck railing

First, we had to demolish and remove the old wooden railings. The 8x8 posts were sound; all we did to them was reinforce their attachment to the sundeck, and add new metal support brackets for the new railings.

Then, we assembled the new railings, using pressure-treated 2x4's and aluminum balusters. The assembly was done on a pair of sawhorses, and held together temporarily by the orange strap clamps you see here, while the assembly was being placed into the newly-installed support brackets on the existing 8x8 posts.

All done except the stain on the new wood, which has to wait until the lumber has dried out some. The sawhorse shown are where the railing assemblies were put together.

Spalted maple, from a branch crotch; note that the grain directions on the left and right are at angles to each other, and between them is a feather-pattern grain, typical of branching wood.

Stuff flows uphill!

We have installed a major upgrade to our septic system, in which a pump in the old septic tank diverts the effluent from flowing into the old drain field (across the street), and sends it uphill instead. At the top of the property, we have a new septic tank and new drain field. So all our old worries about overloading the original septic system are now ancient history. Flush at will!

New tank buried up the hill.

Bobby Welch and his boys did this difficult work. Good job!

Work included adding a concrete bottom to the old tank next to the house;
previously, it had only walls and a top. The septic pump required a concrete base.

Fish platter

Turned from a spalted piece of maple that almost got tossed in the burn pile. Looks a bit like a round fish heading to the right. This was donated to the 2016 Habitat Hoedown fundraiser in Clayton.

Learning turning

Got a Jet JWL-1236 lathe off Craigslist in January, and have been learning turning the old-fashioned, trial-and-error way. Plus, making an unbelievable mess of my half of the garage!

Catch and release

We heard about Natalie Sharp's guide service through Rabun Trout Unlimited's newsletter, and decided to check it out. Originally we were scheduled for early May, but were rained out, and reset for October. It was a birthday present for George (February), and also for Buck and Debbie (May), but finally happened late enough to include me, too (September). Happy birthday, one and all.

Nice one!

Took a long time to land this rainbow!
Buck had the first fish of the day.
This was a private stretch of the Toccoa River, just north of Suches on Gaddistown Road. Our other guide, Bobby, is the land-owner, and he stocked the rainbows about ten years ago; they've been reproducing ever since. We even caught a few fingerlings, along with some big ones.

We hiked in from Sandy Ford Road (off Warwoman Road), following Dicks Creek down to the Chattooga River. The last part of the creek forms a waterfall, where the creek joins the river.
