Cruising

Fall 2010, Timpson Cove

Here are some places to go and sights to see on the lake . . .
You'll be starting out from just west of the entrance to the Anchorage Marina; at times it gets pretty busy with traffic in and out of the marina, so be careful around the boathouse.

Head west on Timpson Cove, to the main channel of the lake (the old Tallulah River bed). You'll pass a house out on a very narrow point, then pass an island on your left (Burton Island).

From here, South takes you downstream past Wildcat Cove on the west side, Murray Cove (aka Mary Cove) on the east side, Billy Goat Island on the west side, Perrin Cove on the east side, Cherokee Cove on the west side, and finally, Burton Dam.

Do not (repeat, not) go over the dam. It's been done, and at least one person has survived it, but it is not recommended.

This is your captain speaking . . .
Continuing West out of Timpson Cove takes you into Dicks Creek Cove. Along the south-west shore of Dicks Creek Cove, near the main channel, are two very large houses, side-by-side. The house on the left belongs to Nick Sabin, the Alabama football coach.
No, THIS is your captain speaking!

Turning North out of Timpson Cove takes you upstream. If you continue north, then east, then north again, you'll reach the US-76 bridge, the only one crossing Lake Burton. Beyond the bridge, the channel narrows. You'll pass a small cove holding Camp High Harbor, a YMCA camp. Beyond that, the channel is either narrow and deep, or wide and shallow in places, usually well-marked. You'll probably run out of depth before you get to where the Tallulah River flows into Lake Burton, from the north.
