Winterizing (whenever there is a risk of freezing) . . .
Protect house water system from freezing by draining water lines:
- Turn off water supply, using floor-level cut-off valve, left of pressure-tank (this is on the left-front side of the garage, looking in).
- Open valves in kitchen sink, bathroom sink and shower (up and down bathrooms), and utility sink next to washer.
- There is a 10' hose attached just downstream from the cut-off valve. Extend the hose so it will drain outside, on the ground. Open the faucet valve, and drain house water system with hose directing water to the street. Close the faucet valve after the water has been drained, and rewind hose so that it is coiled next to the pressure tank.
- Go back and close the valves opened in step 2.
- Turn off the hot-water heater at the circuit-breaker box, which is left of the water tank in the garage (upper-right, switch 2-4).
Protect boat-house pump from freezing, by unplugging the power cord, and then removing the drain plug, which is located below the inlet pipe, on the shiny metal drum. Then, open the faucet valve (located in the back hall behind the pump room), and let the water drain from the line. Put drain plug back in place.
****************************************
De-winterizing consists of reversing actions 1 and 5 above. Then, run water through all plumbing fixtures, to get rid of air in the lines.
Boat-house pump will need to be primed with about 1.5 gallons of water (priming port is beside the outlet pipe (pipe going to the faucet). After priming, plug the pump in and try running some water.
